This is probably the most common source of DIY failure with this project. You want things as dry as possible, so everything you can get out the better. Use a large sponge to remove the remaining water from the bowl and tank after flushing it before moving it. *Thighten the nuts alternating (don't completly thighten one side then do the other, do it by steps). *Reinstall toilet aligning holes with bolts *Clean all traces of wax ring from floor, drain and toilet *Flush and remove as much water as possible from the toilet Some tutorials will tell you to put the ring/flange on the floor and put the toilet over it, but I found that by putting it on the bottom of the toilet you're sure of it being aligned properly. It's easier if you have someone help you to align the screws into their holes when you put the toilet back on, but I did it alone no problem. Just make sure you remove all trace of the old one (on the floor and under the toilet) before putting in the new one. You'll need some plastic gloves and a wide flathead screwdriver or similar to scrape off the old one and lots of spare towels to contain the small puddle of left-over water probably.ĭidn't encounter anything special while doing it. Took about 30 minutes from start to finish. It was because of septic smell though, not because anything was leaking.Ī wax ring was about $1 and a wax ring with flange was about $2, so it was really a no-brainer to go with the one that included the flange. r/DIY now has a Discord channel! There are many different types and sizes of wax toilet rings. Replace the tank lid, pick up your tools and put the toilet seat down before washing your hands of yet another successful household repair. Turn the water supply on and flush the toilet to assure everything is working properly. Make necessary adjustments to the flushing mechanisms in the tank. Step 11: Reattach the water supply line to the toilet tank. Be careful not to over tighten them as the porcelain will crack under pressure. Step 10: Secure the toilet into place by hand tightening the nuts onto the flange bolts. Step 9: Use your body weight to compress the wax ring into place, slightly twisting the stool to assure a proper seal. It is very important that the stool is aligned properly with the floor flange before setting the stool into place. ![]() Step 8: Preferably with the help of someone to guide you, lift the toilet up and carefully set it back into place. Step 7: Install new toilet bolts onto the floor flange using plastic retaining washers to hold them in place. If the ring has a black plastic flange, it should be pointing out away from the stool. Step 6: Press the new wax ring over the outlet on the base of the stool. Clean the area thoroughly to make sure that the new ring will stick properly to both the toilet and the flange. Step 5: Use a putty knife to scrape the remains of the old wax ring from both the toilet flange and the base of the stool. Step 4: Lift the toilet up and off the flange bolts and carefully set it upside down on the towels you laid out earlier. If the nuts are too corroded to remove, use a hacksaw to cut the bolts off below the nuts. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nuts holding the stool in place. Step 3: Remove the bolt caps on either side of the toilet base. Once the water has been drained, disconnect the supply line from the toilet tank. Use a plunger to remove the excess water held in the trap. Step 2: Turn off the water supply to the toilet and flush the stool holding the trip lever down to drain as much water as possible. The towels will cushion the stool and absorb residual water from the tank or bowl. Lay a few towels on the floor to set the toilet on once it has been removed. Step 1: Remove the tank lid and place it in a safe spot. If water is seeping out from beneath the toilet bowl or there is a faint smell of sewer gas in the bathroom, it is definitely time to replace the toilet bowl wax ring. ![]()
